My Students
I am an early childhood special needs teacher from the elementary school which was hit by and EF5 tornado on May 20,2013. I have been teaching for 20 years and in 7 minutes everything was lost. There was nothing left in my classroom that was salvageable.
My students are wonderful little people that have all sorts of problems.
No two are the same. I get them when they are three and can keep them until Kindergarten. We are public school based and they attend 1/2 day. Younger ones in the morning and older ones in afternoon classes. Some communicate well, some don't. Some do not even have basic skills that we work hard to teach them. I have had students that learn to walk or ones that are medically fragile that build not only their confidence in themselves, but help strengthen their immune systems. We are a Title I school.
My Project
My students need different manipulatives in order to gain the early basic skills. These manipulatives will help my students learn basic skills. Many of them can not do basic things, so I chose things that will not only challenge them, but lead to basic skills. I have chosen things that will benefit the younger ones with special needs as well as things that will challenge the older ones and build on their skills.
Our special needs students are very special and have very different degrees of disabilities.
They deserve to have things that will optimize their learning and their needs. These things will help them feel more comfortable and possibly bring back the familiarity that has been lost. Many of these things we had before being hit, so they will be able to pick up where they left off before the tornado.
