A New MacBook to Empower My Youngest Readers

Help me give my students a MacBook Air, so I am able to plan targeted reading lessons, monitor student progress, and access digital resources for the first-graders I provide reading intervention for.

My Project

I’m a first-grade reading interventionist at a public charter school in Washington, D.C., and every day I work with students who need extra support to become confident readers. My small reading groups are made up of bright, curious six- and seven-year-olds who may be struggling to recognize sounds, blend words, or build fluency, but with the right tools and attention, they are full of potential.

Recently, I gave my personal MacBook to my daughter, who is now in college.

As a parent, I wanted her to have the resources she needed—but as a teacher, I’m now without the technology that helps me plan personalized lessons, analyze reading data, and access digital tools that keep my students engaged.

One of my students came to me at the beginning of the year, barely able to recognize letter sounds. With focused instruction, progress monitoring, and consistent support, she just read her first full paragraph last week, with pride shining in her eyes. Stories like this happen in my classroom every day, and having a reliable MacBook will ensure I can continue providing this level of intentional, data-driven instruction.
