My statistics students are in grades 10-12. They are a diverse group but they are all interested in this very different branch of mathematics. Statistics is the class that lights a fire under the students. For many, it is the first time they see the real life applications of math.
Our high school is a five-year comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in grades 8-12 and is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
32% of the students are identified as low-income, 11% have a first language other than English, and 12% are identified as special education. Our high school serves seven different villages in our community.
My Project
I am asking for two donations to my classroom, both deal with technology. The first item is an iPad that will be used during class time to develop the skills required in the technology-rich world they will be entering when they graduate. The second item is over the door shoe racks that will hold students' cell phones while class is going on. It is important for students to learn how to use technology appropriately. The cell phone, while it has amazing capabilities, is a huge distraction in a high school class.
By donating to our project, you will help students learn to use technology appropriately at the correct times.
The iPad will be used as both a teaching and learning tool in the classroom. Students will be able to display the data they collect, research statistical studies and increase their academic achievement. Plus in this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
