My students need a clean, stimulating gathering spot for learning! A new rug will help refresh our worn-out, circa 1970, orange rug!

My Students
In my second grade class room, important learning happens each day right up front! I gather my students to the front of the classroom for read aloud, literacy lessons, and group discussions. Our school was built in the early 1970's. My rug is old, orange and worn out! My kids need a new spot to sit!
I teach second grade in a Title I school in Colorado.
My school is considered a "High Risk" school. A Title I School means that my school has a high free and reduced lunch rate (75.9%). My school also has a large percentage of NEP/LEP (Non-English, or Limited English Proficient) students (22.6%), as well as a high minority rate (59.4%). The students at our school face many challenges, no matter what their ethnic background. Many of our families are struggling to meet the basic needs of their children. We have a high number of families that live together in single households. It is also not an uncommon sight to see grandparents and even great-grandparents care for the children in this community. What has inspired me to stay for 15 years is seeing firsthand the potential for my students, and being witness to their desire to learn and achieve.
My Project
Having a new, colorful rug in the front of our classroom will inspire kids to learn! Many times throughout the day, my second graders gather up front for important learning time. Having a clean, new rug will help inspire them to sit and learn. Children love to gather together for learning. In my classroom we encourage "turn and talk" discussions, helping kids develop their vocabulary, as well as teaching them to be active listeners. The rug in my room is at least 40 years old. It has been used, and re-used! Budget restraints keep us from purchasing new carpeting. It would be wonderful to have at least part of the classroom updated and renewed! I teach my kids to be responsible and take care of our materials. They will jump at the opportunity to keep our learning environment clean and organized, especially if our materials are clean and new!
Having a new, bright spot for important learning will inspire my kids to achieve success.
A new rug up front will help stimulate my kids to learn. I love to gather my kids up front for all subject areas. We also use this spot for group discussions and just talking to each other. Kids need to know that they are important. Even if our school is old, we can do whatever it takes to make it a more stimulating learning environment. Something new and usable will help my kids feel special!
