This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine yourself in a foreign country, a new school and worst of all, not understanding a word of what is being said. My English Language Learners have the challenge to acculturate themselves, learn a new language, and learn new math concepts at the same time.
Many of these students are not at grade level; making the situation even more challenging.
It is gratifying to see how enthusiastic these students are to learn and become part of their new country and learning community. English Language Learners have the desire and the need to succeed academically.
We are located in a culturally diverse, but poor community of Brooklyn, New York.
My Project
Many of these students come from different places around the world. We all agree that pictures are considered part of the "universal language." When we show students a picture, a visual aid, we are not only catching their attention and interest, but we are also ensuring that they understand what we are trying to communicate. A projector will not only assist me in including visual aids to my daily lessons but also in modeling the appropriate way of completing a task and best of all, making my lesson a fun and interactive one. My students, many of whom have never had the experience of learning with technology will be prepared for the challenges of the new "Era of Technology."
