it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a fourth-year special education teacher at a Title I high school in New Mexico.
I have a wonderful group of students who I have the privilege to teach.
They are clever, fun, hard working, and ready to learn. However, there is little to no funding at our school for special education. I teach five classes, four of which have limited or outdated resources. I am a life skills, vocational skills, occupational skills, and English 9-12 grade teacher for students on the ability for graduation.
I want to provide my students with the quality education they deserve, but have limited funds to do this. I supply all school supplies because my students are in high poverty/low income. I order a lot of materials with my own money, just so I have something relevant to teach.
My Project
The supplies I requested are to start a coffee-selling program for staff at our school. My life skills students will be making and selling coffee to teachers at our school during their prep. This gives the students the opportunity to learn math skills, reading skills, listening skills, customer service skills, and the opportunity to earn money for our classroom to go on field trips in the community.
This project gives functional-skills students the opportunity to learn and practice running a business and develop work skills before leaving high school.
These students need all the practice in the work field that they can get. When they leave high school, I want them to feel prepared to get jobs and develop independence. The coffee cart project is a great start in developing work skills and independence for their future.
