My Students
Organization. Responsibility. Cooperation. These are all things that my first graders work very hard to learn. Although they are trying their best to keep their learning spaces organized and put away their materials, it is difficult without a place for them to keep their supplies.
Many of my first graders come from large families, and they don't always have a special place to keep their belongings.
All of my students are in a low socioeconomic status situation. They may share a bedroom with other siblings or relatives. Typically, these children are not given the responsibility to keep their personal spaces organized at home because, well, they just do not have those personal spaces at home. I do, however, see the desire in my students to keep their belongings at school organized and to have a nice personal space in our classroom. I would like to offer my first graders plenty of opportunities to learn personal responsibility, and the best way to begin is to help them organize their materials.
My Project
I am asking that you help these children learn personal responsibility through the use of personal cubbies for students' learning materials. In our classroom, we use tables rather than desks, so learning materials get lost since students do not have "their own" spaces for storing materials. Folders and other supplies tend to get misplaced because students cannot simply put them inside a desk. Currently, materials are stored by me, the teacher, and distributed when we need them. This wastes valuable instructional minutes and does not teach personal responsibility. The requested storage unit will provide this space for the students and instill personal accountability in these first graders.
With this shelving system, I will be able to teach my first graders that they can keep their learning space organized and always know where their belongings are.
Students will learn a routine for keeping up with their learning materials, and they will learn the importance of organization and responsibility. Your donation to this project will help ensure that students in my classroom continue to feel as though their personal space is important!
