A Multisensory Approach To Learning Through Manipulatives
My students need tactile and visual learning tools that give them a multi-sensory approach to learning.

My Students
This year I have the awesome opportunity to be the SETSS (Special Education Teacher Support Services) provider in my school. This position allows me to service students from Kindergarten up to 5th grade. I work with a range of students, from those who just need a little extra help to those who have learning disabilities and/or speech and language delays. We focus on their personal goals throughout the year in small groups to help them with their specific needs. I have the pleasure to help kindergartners to learn how to read by focusing on letter sounds and decoding (which as an amazing experience). Then the next period I may be working with 5th graders, teaching them various strategies they can apply when comprehending a difficult text.
Each student I work with learns differently, it's my job to figure out how they learn best.
Though there are a wide range of challenges students may face, it doesn't stop their determination to learn and achieve the goals they work towards achieving daily. Nothing motivates and educator more than students who want to give their best and yearn to learn alongside their peers. Those are the students I service on a daily basis.
My Project
Multisensory learning taps into our visual (sight), auditory (sound), kinesthetic (motion), and tactile (touch) senses. In order to service students with various learning styles, having a multisensory approach is very beneficial. Learning letter formation can be difficult for students who may have dyslexia or other reading disorders, yet tactile learning can be fostered through the use of sandpaper letters as they trace the letters with their finger. Kinesthetic learners may find it appealing to buzz the buzzer when they’ve completed their work or during a fun math game when they’ve found the answer. Visual learners will benefit from the magnetic early writing page, which serves as a tool for me to model writing. Also, the highlighting tape and reading trackers serve as a visual aid as they read. Learning the same information in various forms opens many doors for my students and gives them opportunities to understand topics that otherwise would be difficult or challenging. Multisensory learning helps students discover their learning style and the techniques best for them. Being able to provide this opportunity for them is rewarding in itself.
