How do we concentrate? Many of us will twirl our hair, tap a pencil, doodle, shake our legs, to help us focus. These actions serve as an outlet and enable us to direct our thoughts to what we want to accomplish. Although it seems counterintuitive, most of us find it an effective tool.
How can we enable students to learn when the coping mechanism becomes a distraction?
My classroom this year consists of six students who are autistic. They are both verbal and non verbal and are AMAZING! Despite their disabilities, they come to school everyday with smiles on their faces and excitement in their eyes. Sensory toys will enable my students to focus on classroom lessons, while still having an outlet for their energy.
The objects in my basket have been carefully chosen to balance the pupils' needs, with their need to focus on what is going on around them.
