Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am excited to start the new school year with my new 5th grade through 8th-grade classes. However, since I am new to the school, that means I am starting new with resources. The pandemic has created an environment where learning will be fully virtual this year. I have to get creative introducing myself and building relationships with the 400 students in the school community. All of my young scholars are considered low-income and qualify for free and reduced lunch. The pandemic has not made this challenge easier. But, as we all know, children are resilient!
My Project
The past year has rocked the foundation of our school community. We have had to deal with the uncertainty of celebrations, graduations, trips, school closing, and re-opening. We have battled illness and death. In spite of this, as educators, we are still teaching students and expecting students to learn.
The gaps in learning and achievement have grown.
Families struggled to obtain internet and technology or learn how to use technology. In the midst, the academic progress of students did not progress the way it could have.
Rebuilding the foundation of the MTSS system for teachers, students, and all school staff will provide our school community evidence-based practices at all tiers. These frameworks, within the books I am requesting, not only teach, but provide tools to help students increase achievement. But, without these proven foundational practices, it will be like trying to rebuild a strong school community on a cracked foundation.
