A Mooving Experience: Cow Eye Dissection

My students need safety glasses, cow eyes, and pig hearts to safely dissect and examine the differences in organs.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you were in middle school science class? Most of my science teachers had us read the book to learn about science concepts. With your help, my students will be able to dissect cow eyes and pig hearts. They will learn by doing instead of just reading about it.

Many of my students come from low-income households.

However, they are very inquisitive and interested in learning about science. They thoroughly enjoy doing laboratory experiments. My students always say that my class is the "fun" class. Granted my class is fun and exciting, but the students are also learning valuable lessons while having a great time in the process. Our school prides itself on having each student reach their personal best in learning.

My Project

Last year through the generosity of donors from Donors Choose, my students were able to dissect cow eyes. This year we are adding pig hearts to our dissection unit. At the end of the year, I asked the students what their favorite experiment for the year was. Ninety-five percent of the students responded that they enjoyed the cow eye dissection the most. My students will actually get to cut into a cow eye and feel the parts of real cow eye instead of just reading about it in a book. The vitreous humor (the jelly-like material) is the favorite of the students. The pig hearts will allow the students to better understand what a human heart is really like. The safety glasses will allow us to be safe throughout the year during all of our experiments.
