Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am in the midst of my first year teaching in the DOE and it has been a roller coaster ride—full of joy, frenzy, and awe. My students and colleagues are some of the most incredible people that I have ever met, and I leave every day feeling lucky that I get to say, “teaching is my full-time job.” That being said this role is a lot of work! In addition to teaching full time, I am also in a Master program to receive my Master of Science in Education for Students with Disability (7-12). My 7-year-old laptop, which supported me throughout a third of my life, is no longer able to keep up with my workload. It frequently crashes, is unable to sustain heavy multitasking functions, and has made it incredibly challenging to work on it and use it for my own coursework.

My computer is the most important resource I utilize in my development as an educator.

Currently, I plan and write all of my own lessons for my 100+ students, which means I use my device extensively for researching topics that are culturally relevant, representative, and rich for my students. I also use my laptop daily for grading and giving feedback on students’ work. In addition to creating curricula, my master's classes are online. I engage with my peers and professor virtually, share footage of ourselves teaching, discuss educational literature, share techniques, and discuss strategies to improve student learning. As a result, I dedicate on average 4-5 hours a week on Master's specific work. Having access to a reliable and functioning laptop will allow me to continue my work in encouraging more BIPOC and minority historians, activists, and social scientists!
