At our school, we're preparing our students to be engaged citizens in our local communities and in the world. My students need tickets to see the documentary He Named Me Malala. As part of our global studies, all 8th graders will be reading "I Am Malala" during the second semester, and we want our students to be inspired by this film to promote interest.
I teach at an urban public secondary school that emphasizes a college trajectory through strong relationships within the school community, high expectations, and a rich curriculum that puts students at the center of their own learning.
We work to cultivate grit, curiosity, social intelligence, and academic excellence in all of our students.
Our eighth graders are curious! They are seeking connections between themselves and others and between themselves and the world.
This group of 96 eighth graders are pioneers. As former members of our first sixth grade class, they will be the first class to graduate from our middle school to our high school.
My Project
We will take this opportunity for a grade-level field trip to a local movie theater to see the documentary He Named Me Malala. This viewing will be the catalyst for learning about issues of tolerance, education as a human right, peace, and grit. Students will engage in reflection and lessons in all disciplines: humanities, math, Science, Spanish, and art.
Any opportunity for our students to learn outside of the classroom is valuable and significant.
I want our students to have this experience and to believe that learning doesn't just happen at school.
