A Mindfulness Counselor's Wishlist!

My students need counseling games and aromatherapy supplies (yoga mats, rug, essential oils, and an essential oil diffuser) to help with creating mindfulness practices in and outside of my office. I want to help them embrace mindfulness and yoga.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday, I have the opportunity to work at an all girls middle and high school in the South Bronx. Most of my students live below the poverty line and face many challenges everyday. Although they struggle, they are an inspirational because they manage to come to school with a smile on their faces and fiercely take advantage of the resources we offer. It is extremely challenging for them to manage their emotions but with love, support, and tools, they are able to overcome by empowering themselves. At times they lose sight of how truly amazing and resilient they are!

As young women of color, most 1st generational college grads from the South Bronx, they are determined to rise above and become positive statistics.

They are invested in seizing opportunities and working hard to help them succeed in life. They are always willing to give back to their school community. Our girls are truly special and deserve so much!

My Project

Due to social media and outside factors out of their control, my students have a challenging time being mindful and calm. Words of wisdom I share with my students is, "You cannot control how other react to you, but you have the power to control your own reaction." Last year I've observed many students acting impulsively and reactivity. My goal is to help nurture mindfulness practices that will help them be successful in and outside of the classroom. Mental health is very important and developing healthy practices needs to be embedded in our daily school lives. It is so important to teach them how to respond versus react. I have selected many games that can help us during counseling sessions. I am a RYT 200 Yoga Teacher and I want to bring this practice to my students! The yoga mats and aromatherapy will help us tremendously! I believe that the resources I selected will have an impact on our counseling sessions and help us as we embrace our journey of mindfulness.
