This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project was initiated, written, and coordinated by students in my 11th Health Education class as we studied self-esteem, and its connection to adolescent mental health and the Seven Health Dimensions. I hope potential donors will consider my students' original ideas (below) when you consider funding their project. This proposal is written by student A.P.:

“As diverse teens from all over the world, my classmates and I all have different beliefs that we try to incorporate into our self-esteem.

As new immigrants facing Junior Year at an American high school, we face fast lesson pacing, intense language demands, internship, college planning, and high-stakes exams like the SAT and state Regents exams. This affects us by starting to feel misunderstood and facing peer pressure. We are making this project because we strive to offer our classmates, and all students in our school, activities and a peaceful area that will positively impact their self-esteem.

Our “Mindful Space” is the foundation for this: it's a space where we teenagers can feel more alive and awake by letting go of negative energy. Students originally contributed to our idea with different ideas and sketches during learning, reading, and doing activities to understand ourselves and understand self-esteem in a book called “The Ultimate Self-Esteem Workbook for Teens” by Megan McCutcheon. After learning about the impact that having this space can have on adolescents’ self-esteem, students are working together to create a dedicated place in our Health classroom where we can let go of negative energy.
