A Mentor Text a Day Helps Writing Grow Every Way

My students need 11 mentor texts that clearly demonstrate opinion writing, 13 texts that show compare and contrast, 12 texts to help learn information writing, and 14 mentor texts that engage them in narrative writing.

My Students

Kindergarten is such a big step in a child's life. It is exciting for both the parent and the child when they arrive on the first day of school. My students are eager to learn, and I am eager to teach them. I love to see the growth that comes in Kindergarten. It is so fun to see the stories they are able to write at the end of the year compared to how much they knew at the beginning. The growth is amazing and I love being a part of it.

Kindergarten is the first step in a child's education, and we want them to gain a love for writing.

It's the enthusiasm that comes from both my teaching and their own writing that helps my students to want to succeed. They love to learn how to write stories and are always excited to keep their minds growing. Books are such a big part of our classroom. There is always a book for everything we learn. I love to create the excitement in my students to want to write and to be excited to learn how to write in many different ways.

My Project

Writing is a daily occurrence in my kindergarten classroom and every classroom in my school. Each one of my students are authors and illustrators and continue to write stories of their very own. We learn how to write informational, narrative and opinion stories. I use a mini lesson to write my own story in front of the class to demonstrate how to write the different types of stories. Having these mentor texts will tremendously change the way I teach writing and the quality of their writing will greatly increase.

Adding mentor texts such as Stellaluna, The Relatives Came and Click, Clack, Moo to my classroom will better demonstrate the different types of writing, help to keep my students engaged in the lessons and get my mini authors and illustrators excited to write stories on their very own.

These books will make it so we have several examples of narrative stories, informational texts, and opinion books right at their finger tips. I not only want to help my own students with writing but I can't wait to be able to share these books with the other teachers in my school for them to use in their classrooms as well! I can't wait to see how engaged all of our students are while reading these fun stories and the enthusiasm they will have when they get to write their own.
