A-Massing Techniques

My students need triple beam balances in order to practice reading them for testing purposes. Of course, they will use them for various labs as well. Practicing precision is important and these will help.

My Students

Our students are typical preteens/teens. They love social media, YouTube, and being creative in their own various ways. They would also like to be a little more independent as they explore their own likes and dislikes.

With a high poverty rate, high transient population, and fairly diverse student population in both ethnic/racial backgrounds and abilities, making sure lessons are differentiated but rigorous for all is important.

To do this, all of their abilities and learning styles need to be considered. My students often need remediation along with the introduction of challenging materials. I don't believe in lowering the bar so I have to help each student reach the heights needed to succeed.

Of course, they are still children. Children learn through constructive play. Children learn when the material is engaging. I want to make sure every child that walks through my classroom doors leaves with a love of learning and, perhaps, the idea that science is awesome!

My Project

Practice makes perfect. While triple beam balances are not used in actual science laboratories most of the time anymore, learning how to read and use a triple beam balance will increase students' patience levels and ability to be precise when doing scientific investigations because it takes time to get the balance to measure properly.

Learning to read scientific equipment, especially in metric units is important.

Unlike most digital scales, triple beam balances force students to to use grams, increasing their understanding of what grams are since they aren't something they see on a day to day basis. Finally, it helps with their mental math skills as they have to add up all of the rows of numbers.
