My Students

Our middle school library is a hub of learning and activity. But libraries can no longer a place of passive learning. Today's citizens participate in their learning. Let's help them create and explore by starting a maker space open to all of the school's 2100 students.

We are a large urban school of 2100 6-8th grade students.

They come from diverse backgrounds and have a variety of interests. Our campus houses a performing arts magnet school, as well as a number of academies each with a specific focus: science, math, film, civics, and musical theater. What all of my students have in common is their curiosity. When they find a topic of interest, they love to explore and learn all they can. I look forward to helping them find those interests and new ways to look at learning.

My Project

These items are only the beginning. Students will learn geometry through origami, combine textile skills and electrical understanding through sewing using conductive thread. They will learn basics of programming and circuitry with Raspberry Pi. They will combine science and art using colorful LEDs and coin batteries making cards with origami and accessories out of felt. They will learn real life applications for the classroom learning about math, science, and art, and these activities will be a springboard to students experimenting and exploring, especially as we are able to bring in more items based on student requests.

A maker space allows for creativity and expression.

In a classroom students have a limited amount of time on particular topic and an expected product to be completed. Maker spaces let students focus on projects they choose and they can come back over and over, taking as much time as they like on a particular project. Many projects will span disciplines helping students to see how topics and ideas connect out in the real world.
