Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science to 120 brilliant 8th graders. All of my students have a strong desire to learn and succeed, and I set ambitious goals for them. Our two main goals are attending and graduating from college. However, they live in a poverty-stricken community and face daunting challenges everyday. Some of these challenges include gang violence, hunger, and inadequate housing and health care. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. In addition, many of my students have learning disabilities and/or are English language learners, which means that they must work that much harder to succeed.
This year, my students will be studying hard to take the 8th grade Science State and the Earth Science Regents tests. These tests emphasize the skills of interpreting and analyzing diagrams, charts, graphs, and data. Unfortunately, teachers are unable to make photocopies at my school, and refills for printers and desktop photocopiers are unavailable. It is particularly challenging to help my scientists develop these skills without the availability of handouts. Since many of my students are several grade levels behind in science and other subjects, it is important that we maximize learning time in class. Handing students a textbook or having students copy diagrams, charts, and other information from the board into a notebook wastes precious learning time that they so desperately need.
It is absolutely essential that I give my students a handout every day so that they can write directly on the handout, save time, and get more work done, so they can catch up to grade level. With a refill supply of toner, a refill drum, and paper for the desktop copier in my room, I will be able to make daily handouts for all of my students, with practice problems similar to those they will see on the tests in June. These handouts will maximize time on-task and help them efficiently practice essential science skills.
Your help will ensure that my science scholars will have access to resources that will help make the best of their time in school, and ensure that they catch up to grade level. Most of all, it will help them get ready for high school and our ultimate goal: college and beyond! On behalf of my students, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
