Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

“We believe that an informed citizenry will act for life and not for death.” ~Albert Einstein I teach Honors Legislative Government to high school seniors. The majority of our students are from low-income homes and are Latino-American. Historically, people like them have not had a lot of power in affecting social or political change. The goal of our Legislative course is to empower our students with the knowledge and desire to change the world around them.

In order to motivate our students to make their voices heard, students spend the semester learning about local, state, national, and international issues. Students choose issues that are important to them and experience the legislative process by writing bills, presenting to the class legislative body, and debating the issues. While students often choose interesting topics, a majority of them concern national issues. My colleagues and I would like to start a unit of study on modern African politics in order to get students interested in global issues.

We plan to use many resources to teach our students about the myriad of issues facing Africa today, but we would love to use a personal memoir to draw students in. 'A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier' by Ishmael Beah would be the perfect book to engage their interest. If we could have two class sets of this book, we could share the books among the teachers and give all students an opportunity to learn about Ishmael Beah's remarkable life. We believe that once students hear the story of one African experience, they will be compelled to learn more about the conflicts on that continent. We plan to end the unit with a culminating project in which students are required to develop and propose a plan to make a difference in the lives of Africans today.

It is our hope that students will carry the lessons that they learn from this unit throughout their lives. The discussions, research, writing, and presenting that students will engage in will prepare them for success in college as well as life. Your help will contribute to a ripple effect that will improve the lives of our students as well as the world they will impact. You will bring us one step closer to teaching a generation of active global citizens.
