My students come from an array of social, cultural and economic backgrounds. 54% of my students come from minority backgrounds and more than 50% of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Their diverse background means that they don't all come to the classroom with the same knowledge and experiences. It is my job to ensure that all my students, regardless of their background, engage in enriching, educational experiences while in my classroom.
My students are always excited to learn more about the vast, globally connected world they live in.
My goal is to expand my students' understanding how they fit into our world and give them experiences to connect to others from diverse backgrounds. A school-wide focus we have is to provide students with an international perspective and to help them realize the impact they can have in our community and on the world they live in. It is my hope that this project will be the start of our students being able to think beyond their own perspectives and begin making connections to others.
My Project
I want to provide the students on my team with an opportunity to enjoy a fantastic book that will take them out of their community and transport them across the world. Furthermore, it will provide perspective on how other children their age face different experiences than their own. I plan to use this book to help students make connections between their own lives, the lives and experiences of others, as well as important content from the math, science, social studies and English curriculum.
A Long Walk to Water will help kick-off a year of learning through global perspectives, and determining ways that we can have a positive impact both locally and globally.
The book is written at a level that will be accessible to all of our students, regardless of their reading ability. The compelling story of two young people (a "lost boy" of Sudan and a young girl kept from opportunities by her water fetching duties) will keep all levels of students interested and will allow students to enjoy literature while helping students broaden their world view and increase their understanding of global issues.
