Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school every day full of life and excitement for what the day has in store for them. As energetic and desirous to learn, many of their basic needs are not met. Almost all of my students are from a low-income household and have very little if any support. Many of them have adult responsibilities like taking care of younger siblings when they should be doing homework, riding a bike, or spending time with loved ones like most middle school students.
The children have a desire to read but unfortunately have very little access to books at home that are relative to their life experiences.
Having the opportunity to choose life relevant literature will foster their desire to read and in return the desire to learn.
My Project
I am determined to instill the love of reading in my students. I direct a book club on campus which falls under that goal. In my classroom, kids are required to read 20 minutes four times a week. They fill out a reading log in which they practice summarizing (reading comprehension) and predicting (critical thinking skills). It is their only homework as reading increases a person's spelling, grammar, critical thinking, and writing skills. My students are reluctant readers unless they can find personal life relevant literature. Please partner with me to foster the love of reading that will last a lifetime with this new literature.
