This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first-grade students have huge smiles, kind hearts, and are super eager to learn and try new things! These 6 and 7 years olds have been distance learning up until just recently. This has been especially tough on children. They have been away from friends, the socialization of school, and in many cases experiencing feelings and emotions that they are not equipped to navigate. As a teacher, I am eager to provide literature that represents these feelings they have experienced such as loneliness, anger, anxiety and, sadness. Books that show characters with similar feelings destigmatize mental illness. The discussions create a safe place to share and learn.
The thing I love most love about my little learners is that EVERYTHING around them is exciting, and an opportunity to learn.
So much joy can be found on their faces each day and with the simplest things. It is my wish to make every day at school exciting and engaging. We all learn better when we are happy, feel comfortable, and are motivated to learn by really enjoying what we are doing.
My Project
The books I am requesting are called The Little Spot Books. There are a variety of titles such as, A Little Spot of Sadness, A Little Spot of Anxiety, A Little Spot of Anger, My Spot in the World and, A Little Spot of Acceptance
A Little Spot Books are written for children to understand all the many complex and sometimes uncertain feelings they are experiencing right now.
The cute illustrations and fun delivery make mental health and inclusion a conversation that can be discussed and understood better in my 6 and 7-year-olds.
