My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be 5 or 6 years old? Bursting at the seams with limitless energy, creativity, and excitement? That describes my kindergarten classroom! We love to learn and have fun, but the pandemic has wreaked havoc on the students we serve in our building, socially and emotionally. My classroom is made up of 22 kindergarten students. We are kind, creative, curious, and energetic learners. We love to learn and play together! Unfortunately, the pandemic has created many difficulties for our students to learn and interact with one another. Several students came to kindergarten this year without having attended preschool or any type of daycare setting with other children. Our school is located in a rural community where many of our families are underprivileged.

My Project

The past few years have been difficult for everyone, but perhaps most challenging for our littlest learners. Everything is different. Desks are six feet apart, masks are worn, and there seem to be extra rules everywhere that change frequently. All these things (and more!) have taken a toll on the social skills of the sweet students we serve in our building.

By utilizing the "A Little Spot of" books along with the teacher's guide and plushies, we can demonstrate to students that their feelings are valid and important.

Students will learn how to identify and process difficult emotions. When we meet students' social and emotional needs, their relationships with peers will benefit and it is likely that their academics will improve as well. These books would not only serve my classroom of 22 students. In addition to sharing with other classrooms in my building, these books will serve future students for many years to come, reaching hundreds of children.
