I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in an elementary schools in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I schools, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.
The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.
Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
After the past few years of disrupted learning due to the pandemic, it's no surprise that there are some gaps in students' learning and more of a need for sensory breaks between periods of learning. The sandpaper letters and phonics card game will help the kindergarten, first, and second grade students I provide academic intervention to build upon their foundational literacy skills so that they can blossom into strong readers and writers. The sensory tent, various fidgets, and more traditional games (like Perfection) will be used by students who need to take a break and reset themselves between periods of learning. The STEM-themed books will be used in literacy lessons and will help build collaborative skills with students with the follow-up, hands-on block activities. The photo printer is a fun way to document our learning, and the stickers will provide a little bit of extra fun to our day.
