Help me give my students phonemic awareness materials like a blending board, phoneme cards, and sound trays; Boogie Boards LCD writing tablets; and Legos and games.
I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I school, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.
The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.
Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
After the past few years of learning during the pandemic, it's no surprise that there are some gaps in students' learning--especially our youngest learners who are developing their reading and writing skills. These phonemic awareness resources and hands-on student supplies will help the kindergarten, first, and second grade students I provide academic intervention to build upon their foundational literacy skills so that they can blossom into strong readers and writers. The blending board and phoneme-grapheme cards, along with the hand2mind phonemic awareness kits, magnetic letters, and LCD Boogie boards, promote multi-sensory strategies that achieve high levels of student engagement--and we all know that when students are actively engaged and invested in their learning, they make the most progress. The Lego mini figures, board games, Stretcheez play food, pipe cleaner book, and stickers are hands-on items for brain breaks after long periods of work, and the tissues are an everyday necessity to keep the classroom running smoothly!
