My Project

I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten, first, and second grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I schools, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

This year I am teaching a STEM elective class to a group of kindergarteners! We are requesting several classic books that will be read at the start of each class. After reading, students will be presented with an "engineering challenge" related to the story. The Legos, plastic cups, popsicle sticks, and wooden cubes will be some of the building materials we use throughout the year. The plastic bins will help keep the materials sorted and organized. The visual timer will help keep the students on task, and they will know exactly how much time they have left to complete each challenge. Finally the stamp maker will allow me to create custom stamps that will be used to accent each of the projects--for example, students can stamp their own pigs to complete their Three Little Pigs project. Each of these materials will be used time and time again to make our projects come to life!
