My Students

What if you are not sure how to make a friend? Maybe you could get a better idea if you had a safe place to sit, alone or with others, and read about friendship. My goal is to show a way we are empowering students through the arts.

Daily we work on character building with our Character Counts program.

This program has been woven into the fabric of our school culture. Our school is a K-8 rural school in central California with a student population of 500. Currently, over 50% of our children qualify for free and reduced price lunch. We have no immediate buildings around our campus. We are surrounded by woods and cow fields. All the students must ride the bus to come to school. Our student population in the Sierra Nevada is predominantly white with less than 20% ESL. Of those students most are Hispanic. Our students work hard and continue to strive for success.

My Project

My students need welcome benches, cushions, and paint supplies as they create a Friendship Corner on our school playground. The benches say Welcome in the seat back. What a great way to enter an area. The students have designed a mural for a small wall on a small building on our playground. The benches will be placed next to this wall which will be the focal point of our friendship area- a mural. The wall will depict the word friendship. Each letter will initiate a phrase in an acrostic poem. The students will use the drop cloth to keep the area clean as they paint. The benches will become a place for students to share time with a friend. I hope the cushions will make it seem more like a place to share a friendship- a place to really talk. This project is one of two related projects that focus on the arts/humanities integration using literature. This project truly shows how we are empowering students through art.

This is a unique way to bring calm and universally happy feelings to a school playground.

My students will have lasting discussions about friendship intertwined with the purposeful art project. They will be able to embody those ideas as they grow in the years. This is a lengthy project and they appreciate that others care enough for them to fund the materials for it. The benches, cushion, and painting supplies will greatly support the outcome humanities and artistic outcomes of this project.
