My Students

We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.

However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.

This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.

My Project

Students have not been in class in over a year. Now that we are returning, there is an influx of heavily dependent children. Many have had their parents completing their work for them, finding pages for them, keeping their materials together, even doing the artwork!

Students must learn to be independent learners by second grade - that's in 7 and a half weeks.

More than half my students came back to class last week. It was astounding how many of them needed constant reassurance and would stop working altogether until I came and checked on them. We have partitions that block both the kids' view of me and my view of them. The only way to accommodate all students at their own levels is to teach separate lessons in small groups. We only have two hours together; if I stop to nod at every student for every problem I will not be able to meet their diverse needs.

These pens and activity cards are able to be split into small sets and distributed to students, staying socially distant. They can use the pens to check their work and get confirmation without me being next to them. This is not an answer to everything, but it certainly would help with the two major obstacles they are facing - reading skills and independence.
