Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day my super stars practice 'Star Words' (sight words) to become better readers, writers, and spellers. The items I am requesting will help them practice their sight words daily and reinforce reading strategies.

I have a group of 24 eager, sweet, and excited kindergarten students.

They attend a public school on Chicago's west side. Our school is made up of 93% free and reduce lunch recipients with a large population of special needs students (individualized education plans, a large autism cohort with students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8th grade), and a unique visual impairment program.

My Project

Every day my super stars challenge me to be the best teacher I can be. In return I want to challenge them to be the best readers they can be. Using different individual and group centers students will use the materials to practice reading, writing, and speaking sight words. We will use the ink pads, play dough, and Wikki Stix to make sight words kinesthetically. The finger grips and stylus pens will help us write the sight words on paper and on tablets. I will use the microphone and the cassettes to record weekly stories that students can listen to at the listening center. This will help them practice how to read a book and will reinforce language arts and listening & speaking CCSS. We will also practice reading using the Time for Kids magazines. The students will enjoy listening to stories and participating in guided reading groups all the while using the magazine to incorporate math, science, and social studies standards!

In 2014 the smart boys and girls in my classroom averaged an 83% on weekly sight words assessments.

I would like to challenge my 2015 class to average at least a 90% over the coarse of the year. (A 7% growth over last years class.) By receiving the materials listed in our project students will be able to practice Star Words (sight words) in a way that is fun for them. This kinesthetic practice will help students make more connections to the words and to their use in reading and writing.
