This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is a full spectrum of learners. There are students who speak English as a first language, whose parents are college educated and have a career. Unfortunately, that is not the norm. Our school is a Title 1 school, with over 90% of the students being on free or reduced lunch. The majority of my students are struggling readers. Even in 5th grade I have students that read on a first grade level. I have students whose first language is not English, who come from broken homes, whose parents work 2,3 and sometimes even 4 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads.
But, even with all those challenges to overcome, they always give 100%.
No matter what is asked of them, they push through because they want more. They want to go to middle school, high school and some even college, hopefully. I instill in them from day one how important it is to always try and always believe that they can do it.
My Project
My students will benefit from all the items I have selected. Some more directly than others but they are all for the benefit of the students.
In 5th grade we learn a lot about the parts of the body and how they work together, now we will have models to take apart and see how they work.
I like the fact that all the models come apart and can be put back together. The students won't just have to learn out of a 2-D book or video, they can "play" with the models and actually touch and learn all on their own.
The recess dice are so recess will be more structured then just "Go play!"
All the school supplies (pencils, glue sticks, pouches, pens, etc.) are to help provide the supplies they need with out worrying about where they will come from.
The HP Printer is so I can print, scan and copy all the things that come along with running a 5th grade class. The microphone will help me make tutorial videos that my students can watch at home.
I requested the headphones because as more and more of the school day is spent using technology, more and more students need their own headphones.
Now, you are probably wondering about the vacuum I have requested. I know it looks odd, but I have many students (more than half) who are allergic to dust this year (it seems to be more and more each year) and on top of that our school is under construction for the next 3 years, at best. I would like to be able to vacuum at least once a day so that I can keep the dust down and therefore keep everyone as healthy as possible so that they can be at school everyday.
More than half of students from low‑income households
