This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Students: Our classroom has the most amazing first graders! They are working so hard to read and they put so much effort into their learning. A listening center would bring so much excitement to our classroom.

My Students: In elementary school, I loved using the listening center in my first grade class.

I had plenty of games at home, but the activities seemed much more special when played with friends in my classroom. My students do not have many games at home, and school is their only chance to engage in these activities. My wonderful first graders are beautiful, inspiring and very active. They live in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood in California. Over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, and many do not have a lot of toys or books at home. Our students often come to school hungry because their parents had no money to feed them breakfast. Most teachers at our school keep graham crackers in our classrooms to feed students who did not get breakfast. My students often ask Santa for new shoes, or clothes for their siblings, when we make our Christmas lists.

My Project

A new listening center would help to bring stories alive and inspire my emerging readers. Students would have a chance to listen to stories, interact with phonics games and develop necessary vocabulary. My first graders absolutely love to listen to stories and a listening center would be a wonderful way to create a love of reading.

The listening center and activities that I have chosen are high interest and would make learning fun. My first graders would be practicing listening and reading skills which will give them a head start in their lives.
