This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from low-income neighborhoods. There parents are concerned about daily living conditions and putting food on the table. Most parents are overwhelmed with their own jobs making it hard to make time to read to their children. The listening center could be the extra support they need
My students are second grade students in a public school.
There are 22 students in my classroom. All of my students live in the public housing across the street and receive free lunch. Some of my students have been classified as having learning disabilities. Although they can be a handful they are full of energy to learn. Some students have parents who have just immigrated to this country and they have a hard time helping their children with their homework. Most if not all the students in my classroom need that extra time to listen to a book being read to them.
My Project
Although the students come from an impoverished community, they are enthusiastic learners. They love to listen to books read to them. As a teacher I wish I could just read books to them and talk about books with them. But with other curriculum that has to be covered and the quantity of students it is nearly impossible. With a listening center 4 students at a time can listen to stories read to them while I meet with other reading groups. This way students will also get that extra individualized reading time that they need and it will help them become better listeners as well.
I am hopeful that finally having a listening center in my classroom will help all my students become more attentive and better listeners.
They will have an extra book read to them daily and it will definitely make a difference in helping them become better learners.
