My Students
I teach kindergarten in a title 1 school. Many of my students did not attend pre-k due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and have not had exposure to a literacy-rich environment prior to kindergarten. Those who attended pre-k virtually, and benefited from interactive read-clouds with their teacher through Zoom or other platforms, still have not had the tactile experiences of holding a book in their hands, seeing the details in the illustrations up close, running their fingers over the words, gingerly turning the pages, which is a unique experience of which there is no substitute. However, my students are very bright, resilient and eager to learn now that they are in school. I aim to help meet my students where they are, and do my best to address the learning gaps so that my students can be proud readers!
My Project
My aim is to promote the development of reading fluency and comprehension in beginning and emergent readers.
The purchase of read-along materials will meet the needs of kindergarten students, of whom many are being exposed to books and reading for the very first time.
Read-along books boost confidence in beginning and emergent readers, strengthen their connection to print, and their relationship with stories, as well as provide opportunities for independent interactions with print. I read to my students daily, but children need to be able to interact with books independently to build confidence, fluency, and comprehension!
