Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th grade English in an especially high-need, high-poverty, public school in California. Students come to our school with multiple languages but low reading abilities, cultural knowledge but high experience with violence, and a yearning to learn but multiple blocks to success.

As we are reading the classic novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, one squirrel of a student begs me to play the CD. I oblige him (it calms him down to mouth the words silently), and the soothing lilts of Ponyboy's character come flowing through the stereo speakers. We are listening to the classic novel on CD, as read by a professional actor. It's been months since we've heard it, but my students still can imitate the voice: "Pooony-boy Cuurtis." The stereo provides soothing music for journals, captivating novels read aloud, and music for free time, but recently, as I turned on the stereo, there was no sound. Students wrote in the quiet of the room, and kept whispering to me, "Ms. F, where's the music today?" I whispered back, "The stereo is broken" and they continued to write in a room devoid of inspirational notes.

We need a new stereo! I envision a listening center, where a small group of four to six students can listen to books on tape with headphones (especially good for my special needs students who have a hard time with reading), while other students with auditory processing issues can read the book in silence on their own. We could use the stereo to supply the entire room with Miles Davis while we write in our journals, or specific students can listen to the novel we are reading. The listening center could provide us with hours and hours of literary enjoyment or just some soothing music while we do our work. Best of all, the stereo would be an excellent way of rewarding my hard-working students, especially ones who go home to places without the beauty of music or reading.

Your help will ensure that all my students can enjoy the pleasure of having someone read aloud to them. Students do really well with reading difficult materials if they can process it aurally and visually. Considering that most of my students come into my classroom with below basic reading comprehension (two or three grades below), it is essential to hook them on reading. What better way than to have them practice reading with someone reading aloud and modeling correct pronunciation, enunciation, and timing? What better way to help my students who consistently struggle with reading? Your help would make it possible for my students to read (and listen) to multiple books at a time, as one group could read a higher level book while others could read a book at their level.
