For many children reading the printed word is an overwhelming task that breeds feeling of inadequacy and failure. My students need more opportunities for reading achievement and success.
Our Title I elementary school is in East New York, Brooklyn and all students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch.
The student population is diverse with families coming in from South America, the Caribbean, Africa and Bangladesh. In my 3rd grade class are General Education, Special Education and English Language Learners. My class is one of the lowest performing 3rd grades and I am struggling to find different "entry points" for learning and developing language and reading skills.
My Project
I am requesting one Read-Along Listening Center and one Classroom CD/Cassette Player with Bluetooth. This reading listening center will be used for individual and small group reading activities. Independent sustained reading is a skill that needs to be developed. When children do not know how to read the printed word can be daunting. Hearing a story read-aloud is a powerful way to get students into a book and start reading.
Your support of my listening center project will help ensure that my third graders develop a life long love of reading because they are going to discover that reading opens up a whole new world.
A good book will pull them into the act of language acquisition and reading skills development. Reading is also just fun!
