My Students

I am a proud teacher of diverse learners in NYC's ASD NEST program. My students are special in so many ways---where do I begin?

Located in the diverse neighborhood of the East Village in NYC, my classroom is a true melting pot of cultures and abilities.

Some of my students are advanced academic thinkers, others are social-emotional superstars, while others are taking their first steps towards academic independence while building their own social understanding. Each student finds great joy and pride in learning new topics, but their methods and strategies can vary greatly. During this stressful remote learning time, many students have had to stay indoors to protect themselves and immune-compromised family members. Many parents have lost their jobs. Many students have limited home libraries and access to the internet which inhibits their ability to practice literacy skills.

As their teacher, my goal is to provide a learning environment where my students are engaged with inspiring books and vibrant discussions.

My Project

I am requesting children’s books which teach children about humanity, society, culture, and life. Diversity in children’s literature is essential for building a more compassionate world. My goal for these books is to use them to have both daily and weekly read aloud and discussion time.

Our time spent with these books will be dedicated to reading for pleasure while also allowing the opportunity to discuss the important issues facing our communities today.

These books can serve as a springboard into discussing bigger topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion of all races and abilities.

I want my students to see themselves and their worlds reflected back to them from books in my classroom library. I want my library to represent the vibrancy and color of our communities---diverse and beautiful communities. During this time of social unrest and change, I am even more inspired to present my students with messages of building equality, understanding, anti-racism, and the value of community.

Additionally, while I believe it is so important to see yourself in stories, it’s also really important to see the other. One of the magical things about reading is how it helps broaden your world view and imagine a life outside your own.
