This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am infinitely grateful to have been given the opportunity to teach 19 beautiful and brilliant minds. My classroom is filled with energetic, passionate, and critical students. The knowledge, languages, and cultural diversity they bring into the classroom creates a dynamic learning environment.

I would like to harness the cultural, linguistic, and diverse wealth my students bring into the classroom to get the entire class excited for literacy.

To this end, it is important for me to provide my students with the appropriate resources and supplies. Please help our students get what they need and deserve!

My Project

Although I teach 4th and 5th graders, the majority of my students are reading at a Kindergarten through 2nd grade reading level. Currently, our classroom library does not have enough books for the students who need the most support. Students at lower reading levels require a copious amount of books to help them build their vocabulary and practice decoding text. "Just right" books are interesting and accessible texts that are integral to reading instruction.

By using "just right" books during reader's workshop and literacy stations, students will not only grow as readers but also develop a stronger sense of themselves and their identities in this world.

Without "just right" books, students can feel frustrated and defeated. A library that has all of our students in mind would help our students feel successful in literacy and excited to read. We need "just right" books that will not only help students grow academically, but also that will help students feel empowered and fall in love with reading.
