A Letter to My Parent!:I'll Never Say Nothing Again!

My students need 24 journals and pencils in order to write letters to their parents once a week throughout the school year, and have their parents respond!

My Students

Parent involvement is essential when it comes to educating a child! How do we get our children to share? How do we let parents feel like part of the process? How do I erase the fear of writing? These journals are the answer to these questions!

My students are wonderful!

They are a group of students of mixed races, gender, and levels of instruction. I have students who work at high levels right down to students who need that extra push. They are all hard workers who enjoy meeting the challenges I set before them!

My Project

I got this idea from a "tweecher" friend (Twitter), and I loved it! Each student will have a journal which will be used to communicate with their parent or guardian. Every Friday, our writing time will be dedicated to a letter to the parent. The student will write about anything that has happened in school that week. A project, an accomplishment, a lesson, an experience with another student, whatever floats their boat! And the kicker, the parent responds to the letter in the same book! My students will develop higher quality writing skills. They will be able to share their lives with their parents. They will become better at expressing themselves. And the best part of all, their parents become part of their learning process. The students have an audience for their writing, and they get an immediate response. An audience always creates better quality work.

Imagine 10 years from now, opening up this journal and reading it.

Not just what they wrote, but how their parents responded. How many future authors may be created with this project? I hope this project will help to create better writers. I hope it builds a bond between the students and their parents. I am thrilled at the prospect of giving them a voice! I want it to give my students a sense of ownership, and a tradition they will want to continue.
