FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Marie Maignan's classroom raised $650
This project is fully funded
I am a Literacy and Social Studies 5th Grade teacher, and every year around the time of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, I begin a unit on the Civil Rights Movement. You would be surprised how little the students know beyond Rosa Parks and the ?I Have a Dream? speech.
Two years ago, I discovered a great book called ?Through My Eyes,? written by Ruby Bridges. It is a memoir, detailing her experience during the integration of an all white school in New Orleans, Louisiana. The book is written in a fashion that makes it very personable for children, without leaving out the real meat of the story including her conflicts about racism and her developing friendship with her new teacher. The fact that Ruby endured so much at 5 and 6 years old makes the story even more poignant to the students.
The students will use the book as a model to help them write their own memoir. We will also use the book to chronicle important events of the Civil Rights Movement. The students learn about ordinary citizens just like them who were instrumental in the achievements culminating in the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
At the end of the unit, the students will write letters to Ruby Bridges through her foundation. They will also take part in a skit that is performed during our Black History Month celebration that is a living timeline of events that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement.
In the past, I used 5 copies of the book for two classes of 30 students each. I read most of the book aloud to the students over the course of one week. I would like to have 30 copies of the book, so the students can have a copy to read in class during group time instead of relying on the teacher.
Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. If you grant this request, you will help my students learn about a pivotal time in America's history.
