This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our fifth grade students are first generation Americans (and we are a Title I free lunch eligible school -- 100 % free lunch eligible this year). This is a school community in pursuit of the American dream and our families fully appreciate the opportunities afforded by public education. Because we are an international community we understand the importance of technology's role in learning. It's the bridge between the old and the new, and it maintains ties with family members around the world.
While our students appreciate how technology can be used, its cost is often beyond the reach of our immigrant population. Our school bridges the digital divide and affords access so that students can develop projects using multimedia and web design. It allows them to be competitive as they become productive proud members of our society. Public education is at the forefront of realizing the American dream and what would be unaffordable can now be accessible to the children. It never ceases to amaze me how the children take what they learn home to teach older family members. We have to remember that we are not just teaching the children, but entire families who have come to this country with talent and dreams for their children.
Apple's Leopard 10.5 for Mac OS X is the latest operating system for the Macbook. While we share use of the Macs that we have, to run the latest operating system (which is backward compatible) allows students to develop multimedia projects using this marvelous program. By purchasing the family pack of 5 we can load the software on all of our Apples in the classroom in compliance with licensing rules. What a great message to our students that they deserve to work with the best (and by purchasing this we would be allowed certain upgrades and downloads from the Apple site!). It's holiday time and my students look at these amazing technologies wishfully. Parents are not even asked for these because they know what their parents do for them already. This "Leopard 10.5" has some great new spots and it would be just wonderful if we could add it to our technology menagerie. Thank you for the opportunity to submit this proposal and for continuing to make the difference.
Teachers hold on to often obsolete materials because they never know when they'll get replacements or upgrades. To give our Title I free lunch eligible immigrant population the chance to work with the "new" in technology changes motivation and tells the students that they are a priority. To use Leopard 10.5 will allow students to use the Internet and develop multimedia projects using new software. Gone will be messages that certain software does not run because it needs an upgrade. Leopard will take care of that and allow students to create digital projects (photos, art and video) with ease. These are the type of details that make the difference between student project success and frustration (because operating systems can't read files online). We hope you agree.
