We are a sixth grade team of 78 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA. Our school houses grades 4-6 and has about 1,000 students. The sixth grade students love being the big fish in the small pond for a year before officially becoming middle schoolers. Everyone was excited to officially open the school's new STEAM room, Compass Studio, this past fall. The STEAM concepts will also be integrated into many classroom lessons and activities. We love to read, problem solve and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.
My Project
As a cumulative project to the Mixtures and Solutions unit, students will be presented with the task of creating the BEST lemonade mixture.
Students will apply knowledge of mixtures and solutions to use STEM skills of measurement and ratios to work their way through the project ounce by ounce.
Students will create an initial 3 ounce mixture by developing a recipe and then measuring out lemon juice, sugar, and water. After tasting the first mixture trial, the group will decide what changes need made to the lemonade ratios. Students will work their way through several trials of different ratios of solute to solvents until they create their best mixture recipe.
After deciding on their recipe, students will then need to convert their 3oz recipe into the ingredient amounts needed to make a gallon.
Students will present their data about each of their trials and prepare their lemonade mixtures on our Spring Open House evening to share with our guests. This project will encompass many inquiry cycles and STEM skills while student groups work collaboratively to change and improve their lemonade mixture ratios.
