My students need sturdy book bins to be able to easily find the books that interest them. They need magnetic letters for their word work to practice spelling words, sight words, and phonics skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching 26 energetic first graders! First grade is a time of tremendous growth and development. Children often begin the year as non-readers and end the year reading chapter books! My goal is to spark their desire for knowledge and set them on the pathway to becoming lifelong learners.
My students love to explore new things and learn about the world around them.
They especially enjoy reading books from their favorite authors and following the adventures of their beloved characters. Their absolute favorite authors are Mo Willems and Eric Carle. My students also love drawing and painting. Their favorite literature is often a springboard for art and writing projects.
The majority of my students are second language learners and have little support at home for their growing literacy. They have the difficult task of learning to read and write while acquiring a new language at the same time. Providing positive learning experiences in a supportive environment is the key to helping students see the value of education and getting them to work hard despite any obstacles that are before them.
My Project
In order to promote literacy in my classroom, I want to provide students with the opportunity to self-select the books they read. Currently, I have my books organized in dollar store bins that were not made for daily handling from first graders. The book bins that I am requesting will enable students to easily find books that interest them and will last for years to come. The magnetic letters will help my little learners to practice their spelling words, sight words, and phonics skills. The consonants and vowels are different colors to facilitate learning.
The sturdy book bins and magnetic letters will provide my students with tools that will assist them in becoming proficient readers and set them down the path of becoming lifelong learners.
