My Students

What student does not enjoy listening to a good book or magazine? Most of them do! Although it makes me happy to watch children amazed when stories are being read to them, I also want them to read on their own. What better way to help them get excited than by providing them materials they can own?

Our school is in its 5th year with the Dual Language program.

Our Dual Language program provides students the possibility to become bilingual and bi-literate individuals in both English and Spanish. This is my third year as a Spanish teacher in first grade. Over the last 10 years I have accumulated a wide array of reading materials, both fiction and non-fiction. The problem is they were all in English and I can't really use them with my current group. Although the students in the Dual Language program can read in both English and Spanish, I need to make sure that I expose them exclusively to Spanish when they are in my room.

My Project

Last year, I was fortunate enough to receive funding for a class set of these "Let's Find Out" magazines. Not only did it provide additional Spanish reading materials for my kids, but the topics were very engaging and age appropriate. Students were able to learn about the concept in class, read their magazine and then take it home to share with their family. In addition, we had access to online materials that are also difficult to get by. For instance, every issue included a brief video to complement the topic being discussed. Better yet, it was in Spanish!

With your donation, you will help a great group of children on their journey to become not only bi-lingual, but bi-literate individuals through the wonder of reading.

I want them to read daily, but in order to do so, I need to provide them with high interest materials that will help them develop and maintain that love for reading.
