Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember learning something new? Do you remember being fascinated by the topic and wanting to know more? My kids share that same excitement about learning. They are inquisitive, talkative, playful, intelligent and very respectful. They are learning to read for knowledge, learning to write narratives, informational pieces and learning to express their opinions. They are learning to become responsible digital citizens, make sense of their surroundings, and develop their skills as life-long learners.
My kids are also becoming bilingual, biliterate, and socio culturally competent!
Not only are they learning all content areas in English and Spanish, but they are also learning about cultural customs and traditions as well as how to think, act, and communicate, as they prepare themselves to work in the future with people from different cultural backgrounds.
They are predominantly Latino, unaware that they live in one of the smallest and most densest populated cities in California; living at or below the federal poverty level. Many of them live in multi-family dwellings in which a language other than English is spoken.
My Project
These stories will be read to students during distance learning the first few weeks of school as Mr. Colato Laínez will be the first award winning author we learn about: his life, writing style, and themes he covers in his books.
Students will identify with the themes, the illustrations, and the language in these books because they were written by a Latinx teacher who immigrated to the US, learned English in school, but spoke Spanish at home.
These books are rich in vocabulary (both English and Spanish), focused on Latinx culture, and a the illustrations are beautiful!
