A Laminated Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words for SWD!

My students need laminating sheets, a laminating machine and velcro to encourage student achievement for students with profound and severe disabilities.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. D.'s classroom raised $249

My Students

Our school is in a district that services students with disabilities. Our students' disabilities range from autism to cerebral palsy, some more severe than others.

We are in a high poverty, low socioeconomic area and many of the opportunities are provided to the children through the school, community and people like you who, with their generosity and commitment to student achievement.

The school appreciates the continual support you have given us by making "greatness in the classrooms" through DonorsChoose.org. Thank you!

My Project

How does one communicate with students who are nonverbal? Students with multiple disabilities have difficulty processing auditory information and require a verbal and visual scanning system that consists of pictures that have been laminated, backed by velcro, so they are easily manipulated. These range from eye gaze boards to interactive books that require students to move pictures and participate in any content area to comprehension questions that have an errorless choice.

In math we are learning how to take one away from a group using the book "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" by Eileen Christelow.

The book is displayed on the Promethean board and a math activity based on a laminated number line and laminated monkeys represent numbers one through five. As the story begins, one monkey with a velcro back is taken off the board, beginning with number five until all monkeys are removed. Students can participate by removing one monkey or taking one away from a group. When the activity is done, we can store the laminated boards and the pictures for future use.

We need laminating sheets, a laminating machine and velcro to encourage student achievement for students with profound and severe disabilities. All of the materials I use in my classroom need to be laminated so that students can engage in same activity over a period of time until they master it. The laminating sheets, laminating machine and velcro backs are costly and are not always provided by the school.

Your donation of a laminating machine, laminating sheets and velcro will benefit us so that we can continue being successful in our daily ELA, math, science and social studies routines. It will provide the tools I need to modify and adapt our curriculum for my 12:1:4 students. In addition those materials can be used repetitively, on a daily basis and year after year. Thank you again for your generosity!
