My Students

"There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there you'll be free if you truly wish to be." Imagine a world, not unlike Willy Wonka's, where everything you touch comes alive with creativity and originality. With your help, this is how my young students can experience music.

The students that I have the honor to teach are young - full of energy and joy.

Kindergartners are like sponges, ready to absorb the world and drink in its wonders. KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) public charter schools, such as the one at which I am privileged to serve in our nation's capital, strive to create a loving learning community where low-income students can explore worlds beyond the limitations of their socio-economic status. For my Kindergartners music class is an opportunity not only to experience the breadth of the amazing imaginative world around them but to actually find their own voice in creating that world. The importance of this creative self-discovery goes well beyond any ability to merely play a musical instrument. For my students this is the first step in a long and, realistically, difficult journey toward achieving their dreams.

My Project

My mother, in her wisdom, started me on piano when I was the age of my students. The feeling of creating music - at any age - is a magic likened to that of the wonders of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Suddenly everything is alive and you are the author of your world. A child that can create can do anything. The piano is a fabulous instrument with which to begin for several reasons. First, it is independent. No need to join the band just yet, it is important for a child to be able to make music on their own. Second, it is immediately gratifying. Just a few instructions can set one off to clunking out melodies in no time, important for a child that frustrates easily. And third, it is fundamental. The visual arrangement of the keyboard is ideal for teaching the basics of classical music theory, essential for more advanced musical study and instruments. With my guidance, I believe that a few keyboards will open a world of possibilities for my deserving young musicians.

"Come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination." In the words of Willy Wonka this is my invitation to students every day and today I invite you to come along.

"Want to change the world? There's nothing to it." Every day I have the awesome privilege of helping young people realize the imaginative potential inside themselves. When I help them change their world they change mine, and together we can change our world. Join us.
