My Students
"What a tragedy it would be if we lived in a world where music were not taught to children." -H. Norman Schwarzkopf, General, U.S. Army, retired.
Music class is filled with singing, dancing, laughing & playing instruments. We currently do not have enough instruments for all students to participate.
We are a K-8 public charter school in a rural district.
Our students are primarily white, coming from middle & working class families. Approximately 30% of our students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program and about 18% receive special education services. Our students are delightful! They are inquisitive and creative. They are developing critical thinking, communication, & problem solving skills. They enjoy coming to school each day & are actively engaged in learning. Our students strive to show empathy, compassion & respect. They are guided by staff to act with integrity and honesty, taking responsibility for their actions. Our students are innovators, often engaging in student-led projects that challenge themselves and others.
My Project
Music is a hands-on environment. Currently, students have to wait a long time for a turn on our classroom instruments as we do not have enough to keep everyone engaged. This wait time prevents students from applying important music concepts as well as decreases student engagement. Research has shown a correlation between sustained involvement in music and the development of cognitive and meta-cognitive capacities associated with high student achievement and college readiness. With the purchase of these classroom instruments and materials, our students will demonstrate increased motivation & engagement as well as have the opportunity to build critical thinking & problem solving skills.
With the purchase of classroom instruments & materials, our students will have the opportunity to increase student engagement in music.
Students who actively participate in music classes have more positive perceptions about their academic abilities, are more self-confident, & better able to express their ideas. In addition, these students are often better able to plan, sequence, & coordinate actions in their daily lives. These benefits exist across socioeconomic levels.
