My students need class sets of books that tell stories of challenging journeys to fit our "Journey to Your Future" theme as we enter middle school.

My Students
One of my greatest desires as a teacher is to share my love of reading with my students. Since this is the first year that our school has had sixth grade classes, we are building our library of class sets of novels.
Providing great novels for my students will allow reading to be enjoyable for us.
Our middle school has just added 6th grade this year, and our grade level team are working hard to ensure that we develop strong traditions - including instilling a love of reading in our students.
My students are a diverse group, reflective of the many different cultures present in the SF Bay Area. I have both high and low achievers, GATE students, English Language Learners, Special Education students, and representatives from just about any other group you will find in a California public school. They are (mostly) eager to learn - especially when we are reading, discussing, and writing about books that are interesting and enjoyable.
My Project
Both of these novels are fictionalized versions of real events. In each of them, the protagonist goes on a long and dangerous journey.
My classes will be reading these novels this year, and then I will swap with one of my colleagues so we can have more novels to read.
Since it is longer, and written at a higher reading level, my higher achieving class will be reading The Captain's Dog, while my other class will work through A Long Walk to Water at a more deliberate pace.
In both cases, we will not only read the novels and write about them, but use them as springboards to do research about their subjects - the Lewis and Clark Expedition and civil wars and refugees in developing nations. I'm hoping that these novels will allow my students to expand their horizons, as well as enjoy a good book.
While I bring a wide variety of books to my classroom library, I do not have any full class sets at this time, so am limited to relying on the basal reader, and whatever class sets I can borrow from my colleagues.
Having these two class sets of books will allow my students to dig deeply into novels, rather than just reading short stories and excerpts, and allow me to better address many of the standards for reading and writing about literature.
