My Students
You have to be in school to learn. Many students come from families that do not value education. Tardy rates and absent rates are soaring. At the same time there is a push by school board and government agencies to improve test scores as well as attendance. We have made progress in this area.
Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.
Most are very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it, and often have to move in with relatives after job loss. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students.
My Project
We have set up an attendance program that involves parent contact as well as a system of rewards (pencils, balls, suckers) for students who have good attendance. The parent contact helps identify any true reason for absences and allows us to help the families. The rewards help the students want to be in school. Each week we read the names of the classes with the best percentage attendance. There are also special rewards for the best monthly, quarterly, and semester attendance. The students work very hard to help their class earn the attendance awards. When we can get the students to school, we can teach them. The more they are there, the more they learn to like school. We have been gradually implemented our attendance program and for the past two years our school has led the district every month in attendance. We have also been the highest school in the district with the percent of students who are in school 90% of the time or greater. This year we hit 98%. This is working.
We have worked very hard to improve our students attendance.
I want to be able to reward the students who have great attendance with rewards that they will enjoy. Attendance is very important to to student achievement. I want to be able to continue providing rewards for students. Students are motivated with our attendance program. Please help us motivate our students. I really love and respect my staff and students. I want to be able to help them succeed. I would really appreciate your help.
